It aims to promote the development of&nbsp;local production in Sweden and in the longer perspective more local consumption. The initiative has since then spread across the country and in 2025 it has finally reached Stockholm in shape of a collaboration with Stockholm Craft and Small Business Association (Stockholms Hantverksförening) and it is commendable in so many ways. Six prominent local artisans have been paired with six designers from the Stockholm area and the results from these first collaborations are presented during the annual Stockholm Craft Week. I am very happy and humbled to be among the chosen designers. My collaborator has been Kaisa Tukonen. She runs her stained glass studio in beautiful Nockeby right outside central Stockholm. Her workshop is filled with knowledge and devotion to the art making in general and stained glass windows in specific. Kaisa and I have worked on a project that is in between a dividing wall, a chandelier and a decorative art piece. It is spatial, colourful and rooted in tradition but also with a desire to add new layers to how the ancient stained glass technique could be experienced. It’s been a joyful journey that has somehow just started. Additional help came from another member of the association. Robert Mood at Svart in Bagarmossen served as the best medicine against stress, solving the metal frameworks with such delicate elegance. At its core lies glass – as material, concept, and motion. Yet the exhibition is equally a meditation on the significance of place, the depth of craftsmanship, and what emerges when time is treated not as an obstacle, but as a necessary condition. The works on display are the culmination of an intensive period of exploration at the legendary Iittala glassworks in Finland – a site that, for nearly two decades, has profoundly shaped Klenell’s creative practice through his award-winning collaborations with the company. In close dialogue with the factory and master glassblowers Tero Vällimaa and Arto Vilkki, Klenell has spent nearly two years developing a new body of work – where the rigour of artisanal precision meets the fluidity of artistic intuition. The result: a series of sculptures, vessels, and objects in hand-blown glass – technically accomplished, poetically charged, shaped with meticulous care and intent. A Dialogue Between Material and Memory9 Factory Road is not merely a title – it is the actual address of the furnace hall where molten glass is transformed. It is also a statement of intent. For Klenell, place has always been a point of departure. Iittala is more than a location: it is a living tradition, once shaped by seminal figures such as Alvar Aalto, Tapio Wirkkala, Kaj Franck and Oiva Toikka. Since 2008, Klenell has returned to Iittala repeatedly, allowing the site to inform his language – a process in which the drawing table and the hotshop merge into a shared vocabulary. Kaiku – An Echo in GlassA central strand of the exhibition is Kaiku, a reinterpretation of Klenell’s Still Life series first conceived in New York in 2004. Here, an organic form is encased within a clear, mould-blown glass cube. Through incisions and cold working, the inner object emerges in silhouette – a play of tension between precision and spontaneity, between the controlled and the organic. The new Kaiku works hover between clarity and opacity, asymmetry and balance. Each piece is an echo – of an idea, a place, a gesture. Revisiting Earlier ThemesThe exhibition also includes unique new works that draw upon Klenell’s earlier collaborations with Iittala and its rich legacy – including Birds by Klenell (2010) and the Kokeshi collection (2011). These themes reappear in freer, more experimental form: abstract, figurative vases that frame the flower in a perfect circle; glass shapes stretched and broken, reflecting their lineage while being transformed by it. A conversation unfolds between past and present, between mastery and play. An Exhibition that Was Allowed to Take Its Time9 Factory Road is the fruit of an almost three-year collaboration between Matti Klenell and curators Anna Bromberg Sehlberg and Elin Forsberg. Together, they have embraced a slow and deliberate process – in which each object, surface and spatial encounter has been shaped with care. This is what lends the exhibition its rare character: not merely the materials themselves, but the time, experience and dialogue that have shaped them. “It doesn’t feel like returning to something, rather, it feels like closing one door and opening another.” says Matti Klenell. I have studied the use of decorative patterns in architecture and tried to identify motifs and methods for how it can add a spatial dimension and an increased value to the stainless steel material. I also wanted to continue the excellent work Stala already have executed in their previous collaboration with Harri Koskinen. His design, that seeks inspiration from nordic nature is refined and detailed, encouraging you to go close to get a full experience. My contribution to the StalaTex collection aim on broadening the perspective of the concept by doing the complete opposite. A succession where my work is representing the other end of the spectra. I therefore decided to aim for abstract, big scale patterns and strong graphics clearly visible on a distance. At first sight the designs might seem simple but it was a big technical challenge to develop them for production. However that struggle in the end only made the outcome stronger. When being put in a spatial context I believe this new collection could play a central role in creating an interesting visual, as well as functional, experience and I am amazed of how fresh and new the concept feels when now seeing it implemented in actual environments. One could think that making patterns on a material would hide the materiality but I am fascinated by the fact that here it seems to be the complete opposite where the patterns enhance the steel materiality in an exclusive way I am very pleased with. When evaluating the project it is natural to see possibilities beyond the kitchen counter top that is the natural home turf for Stala. It is very appealing to imagine the concept in entire interiors also in other surroundings. The soft quality the patterns add to the steel makes it very interesting to test also on furniture for domestic and public use. All in massive oak in a choice of a natural finish or lacquered white or black, and made to stand for a long time. 'It doesn't require any effort to put together, I actually find the assembly of this flat pack table another quality to cherish. Just screw it together, or unscrew it,' says Matti Klenell who explains that: 'I made Pedestal Table years ago for myself because I needed something where to put my laptop and make it easy to move around. Then the table turned out to be much more versatile. Use it for tea-cups, a flower vase, or whatever you fancy. ' Pedestal Table can be as low as 25, or grow up to 55 centimeters. The base has a sturdy piece of metal fastened underneath to ensure stability. The interconnecting bolts and nuts are integral parts of the design with no loose parts whatsoever. The use of real wood vouches for longevity, while at the same time recycling wood remnants in the workshop in making the spacers. 'It's a harmonious example of design,' says Anders Färdig, founder of Design House Stockholm, 'a self-evident addition that will find its use in any space. "Matti Klenell has combined design, art and architecture in a rich and innovative way", reads the justification. Göran Tunström counts as one of the most important Swedish writers of today. He was born in Värmland in 1937 and passed away in February 2000. Many of his books are published in several languages. He is also one of the most read and loved authors in Sweden. Much of his writing originates from his hometown, Sunne in Värmland, Sweden, but it is only a backdrop for destinies of a more general nature and raises questions of a deep existential nature. His novels Juloratoriet (The Christmas Oratorio) and Tjuven (The Thief) are both examples of what could be described as the return of storytelling in Swedish literature, and one can sense here a kinship with Selma Lagerlöf’s fairy-tale storytelling that takes place in the same Swedish landscape. Offecct now publishes the first book in a planned series about its collaborations with various designers from around the world. The purpose is to tell more about both the product and the designers, an alternative way to provide in-depth knowledge of the thoughts, design and craftsmanship behind Offecct’s range in the absence of physical meetings. In this new book project, Offecct collaborates with a number of renowned creatives, like design writer Petter Eklund, photographer Björn Ceder, Ivan Brodey and creative director Henrik Nygren. The film that accompanies the book is made by the documentary filmmaker Carl Javér. “We want to create a cohesive story about our unique collaborations with world-leading designers and provide an in-depth experience of our products. In a way it´s a kind of missionary, to spread knowledge and understanding about the work behind great design. When fairs and other meetings are canclled, we find other ways”, says Maria Olofsson Karemyr, Brand Manager at Offecct. The book that is now being published is about the Swedish designer Matti Klenell. His collaboration with Offecct started in connection to the renovation of Nationalmuseum in Stockholm in the mid- 2010s. The result was the sofa system Font, launched in 2018 and now extra relevant with several freshly designed modules. In the book and in Carl Javer´s accompanying film, the audience is invited behind the scenes where they get to meet Klenell and Offecct in the midst of the work process. Klenell’s design always has an apparent ease. Petter Eklund writes: “most things seem to have come about out of curiosity. Things are created, as if unsought for”. The proportions strike a careful balance—compact like a Fiat 500, yet generous like a Volvo 740. Detail and expression are handled with the confidence that comes from eighty years of daily experience in woodworking, rooted in the forests of Småland. Together with the skilled development team at the Swedish lighting manufacturer Ateljé Lyktan, an entire universe of organic lighting applications was created. The initial sculptural and site-specific approach, framed by the museum commission, was later refined into a series of essential lights with great flexibility and a strong, minimal character. Ateljé Lyktan is located in the very south of Sweden, an area known for its beautiful, endless apple orchards. The expression of Mela therefore came to draw inspiration from this local fruit. It also proved to be an interesting shape to engineer in the company’s workshop, drawing on their extensive expertise in metalwork and spun aluminium techniques. Soft, balanced, and with a natural sense of weight, Mela stands out as a pendant both on its own and as part of larger compositions, where several shades come together in sculptural chandeliers. A system that allows for rhythm, variation, and movement within a space. Mela is a lighting piece that moves between the singular and the combined. The collection is available as a pendant in three sizes and three colours. The chandeliers are offered in three different versions, creating everything from strict geometric lines to more organic and playful formations within the spaces they inhabit.Photocredit: Jonas almost always start from a sense of place. I believe this has to do with my background. I studied interior architecture and furniture design at Konstfack in Stockholm. There I was taught to always take the room as a point of departure—even when designing objects. The place adds meaning, both through practical needs and through its craft traditions. Things are made differently in different places. I have seen this in all types of production, but perhaps most clearly in glassmaking. Having had the privilege to work with the material in various contexts around the world, I’ve learned—and been fascinated by—the fact that glass is approached completely differently in the Czech Republic, the U.S., Sweden, Italy, Taiwan, or Finland. What is entirely natural in one place is incomprehensible in another. Where things are made, things are also invented. Some of these inventions are closely guarded secrets to create competitive advantages, while others spread and reappear elsewhere in new contexts. That transformation that occurs when something is removed from its origin and placed into a new setting is yet another dimension of a place’s significance—or rather, the importance of exchange between places and traditions. In the transition from one place to another, something truly authentic often emerges, where curiosity and sometimes a lack of knowledge distill an original essence that I find completely irresistible. One such place is Factory Road in the village of Iittala, some 20 kilometers north of Hämeenlinna in Finland. The identity of the place is its glassworks, and at number 9 you’ll find its beating heart. This is where the melting furnaces are located, where the glassblowers work, and where glass is made in a way no one else has managed to replicate. Iittala’s production is unique in terms of quality, expression, and methods. Its distinctiveness is largely due to this specific place being so open to external influences. Attuned to the world beyond, the glassworks has drawn in inspiration with an open eye. Iittala is wholly Finnish but also very international, with impulses brought here by designers, craftsmen, and engineers who have been active since the glassworks was founded in 1881. Its golden age began with Alvar and Aino Aalto in the 1930s and was carried forward by names like Tapio Wirkkala and Timo Sarpaneva, who earned Iittala a worldwide reputation in the glass world with designs that received numerous international awards. When the nearby Nuutajärvi glassworks became part of Iittala, designers like Kaj Franck and Oiva Toikka became part of the narrative.&nbsp; Toikka, in particular, embodied the transformation of international influence into something utterly Finnish. The vitality and energy in his work are rooted in Murano and its Venetian glass techniques—but were reassembled into something radically new. They could never have originated anywhere else. If you visit Iittala or Nuutajärvi, you and your experiences become one with the place. My own journey with Iittala began in 2008, when I was invited to design glass birds as relatives to the famous birds Toikka had been developing since the early 1970s. He, in turn, based the motif on his predecessor and mentor Kaj Franck’s bird designs. Continuing that tradition was both an honor and somewhat surreal, especially as Oiva was working in the hot shop at the same time, and I got to closely observe his artistry and relationship with glass. Those impressions have stayed with me and have influenced how I approach my own work today. Over the years, I have returned to the Iittala factory for various assignments, and through these visits, a quiet friendship has formed—with the place and the people—many of whom are depicted in the photos I’ve taken to document the things we’ve made together. Now, 17 years later, when I’ve been generously given the opportunity to work independently in the company’s hot shop, countless memories have returned. Memory also became central to the artistic work. I ended up working with motifs I had developed even before my first visit to Iittala—motifs that, in a way, opened the doors there. Now I had the chance to charge those form worlds with a new expression that feels both more refined and somehow rawer, more direct. Perhaps also with more confidence than the projects I undertook with glass as my younger self. My personality is such that I always seek out new paths, while admiring artistic practices who spend a lifetime exploring the same subject. Maybe that’s why it’s been good to return to something and linger for a while? The result, now shown in my first solo exhibition at Galleri Glas in Stockholm, turned out to be something different. And that, of course, is due to the place where I’ve been able to work and reflect. It’s also because of the space where the work is now exhibited. The project has involved a close dialogue with Anna Bromberg Sehlberg and Elin Forsberg at the gallery—about the objects themselves, the theme of the exhibition, and how the space that surrounds it should be designed. My first exhibitions with glass as a focal point took place just around the corner, at Galleri IngerMolin, and that exploratory phase concluded in 2011—around the same time my projects in Finland intensified and my work took a slightly new direction. Galleri Glas, despite its geographic proximity, offers a new and completely different context. This has been crucial for realizing the project and rekindling my curiosity about art glass. It doesn’t feel like I’m returning to something, but rather that I’m closing one door and opening another. It’s been allowed to take time. My first meeting with Galleri Glas happened just over two years ago, followed by more than a year of traveling back and forth across the Baltic Sea. Slowly, something quite distinctive emerged in collaboration with master glassblowers Tero Vällimaa and Arto Vilkki. Behind the scenes, my brother Simon has also been present. We’ve collaborated in many ways over the years, and we have a unique dialogue when we meet in his hot shop. There’s a lightness in our collaboration that I’ve carried with me—in the form of objects and samples to continue developing, but perhaps even more as an attitude. Over time, the dialogue in Iittala has come more and more to resemble the one I have with my brother. In the pictures taken throughout the years at the factory in Iittala, Tero and Arto – like many others around me in the hot shop – appear as younger reflections of themselves. Now, with this project I return with the camera to document a new process, a new mark on the timeline, where also new faces, new hands and new acquaintances from Fabriksvägen 9 are being added to my Svensk Form is a jury-selected, annual touring exhibition and platform for young design. The project was initiated in 1998 with the aim of increasing knowledge and broadening the reach of new, innovative Swedish design, helping it connect with new audiences. The brief from the founder, Svensk Form, the producer Dunkers Kulturhus, and the main sponsor Svenskt Trä (Swedish Wood) was to create a mobile exhibition concept capable of hosting the project’s selected entries for the next three editions. The design needed to offer great spatial flexibility to adapt to the varied conditions of the different venues along the tour. There was also a strong desire for a concept that could convey the project’s message more broadly and help generate visibility across various media platforms. This presented an intriguing challenge: designing something for such an extended period, for objects not yet created, and for venues not yet chosen. The result is Årsringar (Annual Rings). A library of podiums in various sizes was developed. These podiums stack into each other, creating a compact design for transport while allowing great flexibility depending on the location and the objects exhibited. A subtle sprinkle of grey paint adorns the fir wood displays. The technique is inspired by traditional paintwork in rural Swedish wooden architecture, where it was used to enhance the value of simple building materials. Each year, a new sprinkle of paint in a different color will be added to maintain, renew, and evolve the exhibition design. Layer upon layer. Generation after generation. series of glassware for the set table, drawing on the rich heritage of Marimekko. Founded by Armi Ratia in 1951, the company is best known for its remarkable production of patterned textiles, which has secured its unique position in the world of design and fashion. Marimekko’s design language moves effortlessly from the high street to the radical progressive movements of the 1970s. There is a seductive resistance in Marimekko’s soul—one that the Syksy collection seeks to capture. Syksy is Finnish for autumn. The patterned surfaces of the glass series evoke the image of a gentle, drizzling rain at the turn of September and October—that time of year when Helsinki, Stockholm, or any Nordic city is at its most beautiful, blending melancholy with a lingering festive spirit. Each piece in the collection offers its own interpretation of the theme, yet all are united by the way the patterned glass interacts with light. They glitter and shimmer, behaving almost like liquid. They make a statement. They seduce, yet carry a progressive resistance that gives them a distinct and unique identity. The project began in 2021. The first pieces were launched two years later, and since then, the Syksy family has continued to grow. The original wine glass, carafe, and water glass have been joined by a side plate, a deep plate, a generous bowl, and a larger tumbler. Somehow that became very visible in the collection. Decorative bottles in various dimensions where two tempraments meet in one unified yet uncontrolled body. We studied the use of decorative patterns in architecture and tried to identify motifs and methods for how it can add a spatial dimension and an increased value to the stainless steel material. A core aim was also to continue the excellent work Stala already have executed in their previous collaboration with Harri Koskinen. His design, that seeks inspiration from nordic nature is refined and detailed, encouraging you to go close to get a full experience. In this case the contribution to the StalaTex collection strives to broaden the perspective of the concept by doing the complete opposite. A succession where the designs consiously should represent the other end of the spectra. The result landed in abstract, big scale patterns and strong graphics clearly visible on a distance. At first sight the designs might seem simple but it was a big technical challenge to develop them for production. However that struggle in the end only made the outcome stronger. When being put in a spatial context the Grid collection could play a central role in creating an interesting visual, as well as functional, experience and it us amazed of how fresh and new the concept feels when being implemented in actual environments. One would think that making patterns on a material would hide the materiality but it is fascinating that it seems to work the complete opposite way, where the patterns enhance the steel quality in an exclusive way.When evaluating the project it is natural to see possibilities beyond the kitchen counter top that is the natural home turf for Stala. It is very appealing to imagine the concept in entire interiors also in other surroundings. The soft quality the patterns add to the steel makes it very interesting to test also on furniture for domestic and public use. As a designer perhaps that notion of open ends and so much yet to explore is what was the most exciting experience with this collaboration. The museum consists of two buildings. The original one was designed by Cyrillus Johansson in 1929 and is one of the finest and most special architecture moments from the Swedish Grace era. It is strongly influenced by Chinese architecture that gives it the character of a temple or a shrine. In 1998 an extension, designed by Carl Nyrén, was added to the original building and this addition both challenged and followed the original masterpiece in an incredibly skilled and very personal way. Just as in the original building the Asian influences are strong but here carried out with a more raw expression that brings Japanese building traditions to mind. I am born in Gothenburg but raised in Värmland where my family also derives from. My high school years were spent in Karlstad and my grandparents actually lived right across the river from the museum and from the exhibition space I could see the house where they spent their last years. My first employment as an architect was at Nyréns Arkitektkontor in Stockholm and my very first task when starting there was to help out with designing smaller furniture fittings for the Värmlands museum extension that soon was about to open. To return here 22 years later to exhibit &nbsp;therefore became a story about closing many circles and it became an opportunity to discuss how the importance of origin and location and local traditions has shaped my work as a designer. The 650 m2 Nyrén hall with its impressive 6 meter ceiling height and large characteristic windows facing the river was divided in to five chapters describing distant and nearby places that has been important inspiration for my work. To arrange the objects and lead the visitor through the exhibition a transparent wall system was created. Its pine construction resembles something unfinished and ongoing. The grid work also deliberately connects to the architecture of the museum buildings. As for the objects on display, the exhibition design itself became an exercise in using the location as inspiration for form and context. Much because of my name – I am constantly asked if I come from Finland – even though I have not had any relatives from there for many hundred years. A relationship has been built up to the place in a rather backward way, since I actually did not come to visit Finland until adulthood. The country is a role model in many ways when it comes to architecture and design. During my years of study at Konstfack, I was inspired by historical favourites such as Alvar Aalto and Ilmari Taapiovara. In vain I tried to get an exchange year in Helsinki. Artek, Marimekko and Iittala – all manufacturers with a clear artistic attitude and skilled brand strategy – quickly became producer favorites. When I first became interested in glass design, the Finnish ceramicist and glass artist Kaj Franck was an important inspiration. This led further on to the discovery of the work of Tapio Wirkkala and Timo Sarpaneva. In 2008, the glass artist Oiva Toikka unexpectedly became my entrance ticket to Finland, when I was asked by Iittala if I was interested in reinterpreting his classic glass birds. It was, of course, an irresistible mission, and the beginning of a relationship that is still alive and developing. Traveling to Helsinki has become an important and natural part of my professional life. Over the years, I have acquired a rich and important network of friends who mean a lot to me on several levels. The Finnish design tradition is similar to ours but at the same time carries something very unique. It has a functional straightforwardness that constantly strives for maximum expression with the least possible means. It is seldom lavish, but always dazzlingly rich in its expression. For me as a designer, the place is often present as inspiration, prerequisite or a goal. In an increasingly uniform world, the local is becoming increasingly important – the origin give objects a distinctiveness. Even if you work with wood everywhere in the world, it is done a little differently depending on where you are. It is the same with ceramics or glass, the production has developed in different directions depending on location. At the same time, there is a global exchange of ideas today, where traditions are shared, mixed and renewed. That was the starting point with my colleagues Carina Seth Andersson, TAF Studio and Stina Löfgren when we took on and formulated this special assignment. In a collaboration in Taiwan a few years earlier, we had used traveling as a method of formulating a concept. Now we chose to do the same. We traveled around the country where we grew up, where the habit easily settles like a veil over everything that can be seen. We helped each other to observe crafts, history and landscapes in a way that gave new color to familiar things we thought we had already looked at enough. We found a palette to start from and maybe it was on the way home from the porphyry quarries in Älvdalen that everything started to fall in place. The interior is based on the studio and the workshop as a common reference for everyone involved in the design. In a house full of masterpieces, we have focused on the investigative process in creative work. We have tried to put both ourselves and our collaborators in new contexts and encourage everyone to try new ways. All collaborations were named NM&amp;, inspired by the inventory numbers in the museum’s collection. It has been a collective effort spreading out from the core that reaches both near and far away. Textiles were woven in Värmland, woodcuts were printed in Örnsköldsvik, glasses were blown in Boda. Sometimes we ended up further away from the center than we could have imagined. The motorway exits south of Stockholm lead to places such as Kosta, Nybro, Kalmar, Valdemarsvik, Vaggeryd, Skillingaryd, Bor, Älmhult, Målilla and Boda. They are all seats of learning for those who work with industrial design. It can be a breeding and quite harsh environment, but very vital when you get to know it.&nbsp; We have not always got along well with each other but neither of us have given up and slowly, slowly we have started to reach an understanding on our own terms. The Småland region is also a short but important part of my upbringing. I lived in Orrefors for a while when my parents studied at Glasskolan. I was four years old in 1976 but the scents, colors and people in the Kingdom of Chrystal have been significant in shaping me and have certainly contributed to my choice of profession. For a few years now, I have been involved in glass production here. The work is usually done in collaboration with skilled assistants who have come to work for a limited period before returning to studies or moving on in working life. Some stay a short time while others stay longer. Some return. While present, the daily work is influenced in new directions. The dialogue between us is an unfailing driving force and I am constantly surprised by the power existing in collective work, when several people is working in the same direction. There are also creative people who rents a workplace in my studio and inspire in new directions. A third group are colleagues who come by, stay for a while and collaborate within the framework of a temporary project. All are important people for exchanging ideas and developing things together. Our ongoing discussions have sometimes grown into bigger and very special projects. 2020 and 2021 were years of involuntary isolation and hence the dimension of local production was strengthened even more and the projects were developed longer. The work in the studio is personal and exploratory. The two buildings of Värmlands Museum are wonderful examples of such a cultural exchange with their features from Chinese building tradition placed in a Swedish context. The japonism of the artist group Rackstadsgruppen has largely shaped the image of Värmland’s art. Cultural interaction drives development both forward and in new directions in both Asia and Europe. In my work, Asian design traditions has always been near. The reason for this comes mainly from my early collaboration with Japanese clients who gave me the opportunity to travel and work in Japan. Over time, the networks developed and in 2012, together with the illustrator Stina Löfgren, I made the first trip to Taiwan to begin a collaboration with the National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute (NTCRI). To me, Taiwan is a dynamic cultural intersection with a mix of influences from China, Japan and Polynesia. It is ultra-modern and ancient at the same time. Every stay fills one up with impressions to the breaking point. The theme of the project was to develop traditional Asian lacquer techniques in collaboration with skilled craftsmen. Soon, TAF Studio and Carina Seth Andersson joined the group. We made a total of 21 trips to Taiwan and visited many factories, craftspeople and artists all over the island. The result was a mixed collection of objects influenced by Taiwanese craftsmanship and everyday life but surprisingly cohesive despite our different expressions.
